Galway Bay fm newsroom – Roger Casement’s contribution to the people of Connemara will be commemorated at a special event today.
It’s part of a nationwide series of events to mark the 100th anniversary of his execution by British Government for his involvement in the 1916 Easter Rising.
These include an open day at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, Dublin which will focus on his contribution to international human rights.
Casement was hanged at Pentonville Prison in London – the only leader to be executed outside Ireland – and was repatriated in 1965 via the air force base.
He travelled to Connemara in 1913, where he visited a number of schools including Scoil Mhic Dara in Carraroe.
Casement will be honoured with a special tree planting ceremony at the school today at 1pm.
Seosamh O’Cuaig is one of the local organisers – he says Casement’s legacy is still felt in Carraroe.
