Galway Bay fm newsroom – A county councillor has moved to allay fears that a flood-prone site could be considered for an extension of Annaghdown graveyard.
It comes as efforts continue to find a suitable site as the exisiting graveyard has reached full capacity.
A local committee is now examining an eighth possible location in a campaign that began seven years ago.
Efforts to identify suitable lands adjacent to the cemetery have proved unsuccessful after investigations concluded they were unsuitable due to archaeological significance.
However a nearby resident has raised concerns that a site now being considered in the Shankill area is prone to flooding and is not suitable.
It’s understood the site has been offered free of charge to the local authority and ground testing is taking place.
Tuam area Fianna Fail councillor Mary Hoade says a thorough planning process will be followed on the selection of any site which will examine all concerns and offer an opportunity for local objections.
