Galway Bay fm newsroom – Lifeguards at Trácht beach in Kinvara and the RNLI are being praised for their efforts in rescuing a father and son who got into difficulty in the water yesterday afternoon. (21/7)
Lifeguards Mark Buckley and Niall Hanley contacted the Coastguard shortly after 3p.m when they became concerned about the pair of kayakers who had set out from the beach earlier in the afternoon.
Valentia Coastguard immediately launched a search operation alerting Galway RNLI, the Shannon-based Coastguard helicopter and Doolin Coastguard Unit.
The helicopter managed to locate the father in his 40s and his 11-year old son less than an hour later in the water after their kayak had capsized.
They had swam to a boat moored near the entrance to Kinvara Bay where they called out for help.
They were recovered by Galway Lifeboat safe and well.
