Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Fine Gael county councillor and the former Mayor of County Galway is suing RTÉ claiming that the media company sought to entrap him.
Councillor Tom McHugh from Tuam alleges that RTÉ sought to procure his corruption as a public representative and sought to interfere with his responsibilites as a public representative.
According to today’s Irish Times, Councillor McHugh claims he was contacted by a woman purporting to be from Iceland with an interest in investing in wind energy in East Galway.
He claims she falsely represented herself and was a servant or agent of the broadcaster.
He said he explained the planning process to her and gave her the information she required for an application for a wind farm, and contacted a consultant about the matter.
Councillor McHugh is bringing proceedings against RTÉ seeking damages, including aggravated and exemplary damages.
It follows the broadcast of a programme entitled ‘RTÉ Investigates: Standards in Public Office’ which was broadcast on December 7th 2015.
Councillor McHugh from Kilcloghans claims the broadcaster attempted to induce him into saying or doing something so as to damage him and secretly recorded him.
RTÉ has denied any attempt to entrap Councillor McHugh.
A judge has this week ordered further details to be provided of some aspects.
