Galway Bay fm newsroom – A leading tourism body is calling on the government to ringfence 125 million euro of its planned spend on tourism for the West of Ireland.
The government has outlined that it intends to invest a quarter of a billion euro in the tourism industry.
A report by the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation says at least half of the 250 million euro spend should be spent in the West.
‘Tourism in the West’ also backs calls to extend the Wild Atlantic Way into the towns and villages of Galway.
Almost 10% of workers across the county are employed in the tourism industry, and tourism accounts for almost 15% of all business enterprises in Galway city and county.
Speaking in the Seanad recently, Junior Tourism Minister Michael Ring says the development of the Wild Atlantic Way is the responsibility of Fáilte Ireland.
He says the popular attraction was always intended as a coastal route, but inland towns and villages interested in buying into its success are welcome to work with Fáilte Ireland to attract visitors.
