Galway Bay Fm newsroom-Galway City and County Council are being urged to consider a fairer system for those who move from one local authority’s housing list to another.
Senator Fidelma Healy Eames says it’s ‘desperately unfair’ that someone can spend years waiting on one list, only to have to start over if they move from city to county or vice versa.
She says one individual spent seven years on the city list, before being forced to start over after moving to Claregalway – and is now eleven years waiting with no sign of a house in sight.
She says a fairer credit system is needed for social housing that grants credit for time spent waiting.
The Independent Senator says a criminal record wouldn’t be wiped out by moving jurisdiction, so there’s no reason a housing record should be.
Senator Healy Eames it’s time for both Council’s to face up the crisis and devise a system that’s fair and transparent
