Galway Bay fm newsroom – Apple visited 25 potential sites across Ireland before deciding to base its 850 million euro data centre at Derrydonnell in Athenry.
The oral hearing on the planned facility is underway this week at the Connacht Hotel, and is today hearing statements on Apple’s reasons for choosing the site near Athenry.
Oscar Gonzales, head of site selection for the tech giant, says the IDA provided the company with a portfolio of 25 possible sites across the county, and Apple visited each one.
He says some sites were discounted immediately due to a lack of transport infrastructure and fibre connectivity, or the sites were too small to accommodate the company’s 15 year-masterplan of 8 data centres at one site.
Apple says the Derrydonnell site is uniquely attractive, and will allow for significant investment, cost efficient and environmentally friendly development.
The hearing continues.
