Critical services at UHG blocked from expansion by nursing shortages

Galway Bay fm newsroom – UHG is struggling to fill specialist nursing roles at the hospital – and many critical services cannot be expanded as a result.
That’s according to Saolta Chief Operating Officer Ann Cosgrove, who revealed at this weeks meeting of the Regional Health Forum that they were facing difficulties in recruitment.
She told those in attendance that UHG has been unable to build capacity due to constant turnover and shortages in specialist nursing fields including ED and theatre.
The struggle to fill the crucial roles comes despite a number of international recruitment fairs held by the HSE in Ireland and the UK.
The forum heard that while overall staffings have increased at UHG, many critical services can only be maintained and not expanded due to the specialist shortages.
Forum member and Tuam area Councillor Mary Hoade says prospects for nurses in Ireland are not competitive.
