Galway Bay fm newsroom – A controversial 1916 monument which was erected at Mervue in the city in March looks set to stay.
The Mervue 1916-2016 stone at Connolly Avenue was previously described as ‘Republican propaganda’ by City Councillor Padraig Conneely.
Councillor Conneely said the stone, which had displayed an image of an Easter lily traditionally worn by Republicans, should be removed as no planning permission had been sought.
His colleague Sinn Féin Councillor Mairéad Farrell denied that the stone had been erected by her party.
The city council held meetings with local residents at Connolly Avenue and local councillors about the plaque.
The council says residents admitted that they didn’t know of the requirements for prior approval for such a plaque.
The wording on the plaque has now been altered and the emblem of the lily has been removed.
Recreation and Amenity staff from the council have assessed the plaque and found that it doesn’t interfere with the enjoyment of the open space at Connolly Avenue.
Therefore the council has decided to allow the plaque at Mervue to remain in place with the slight alterations.
