Galway Bay fm newsroom – The city council has given the go ahead for a new domestic violence refuge in the city.
Cope Galway has been granted planning permission to change the old Magdalene Convent at Forster Street into the refuge.
The convent, which is a protected structure, was donated to Cope by the Sisters of Mercy.
The new building will have 9 self-contained residential units, staff accommodation, offices, outreach facilities, meeting rooms and a childcare facility.
The planning permission is subject to certain conditions.
Cope’s current premises at Waterside House only has capacity to accommodate 6 women and 15 children.
