Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Roscommon/Galway T.D Michael Fitzmaurice has quit the Independent Alliance grouping.
Deputy Fitzmaurice was the only member of the grouping not to vote for Enda Kenny as Taoiseach.
In a statement he says he felt he had to leave, as his access to speaking time in the Dáil chamber while still in the grouping would be limited.
He says he will be voting with the minority Government on issues that benefit society at large.
Deputy Fitzmaurice abstained in the vote on Taoiseach after government formation negotiations over turfcutting failed to reach a resolution.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice says he will be better able to hold the government to account out of the Independent Alliance.
The Independent Glinsk-based T.D says people who voted for him will know that he had a major part to play in the formation of policy for the new government.
Deputy Fitzmaurice says that he’s open to talks with the government in the future.
