Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are approximately 500 heroin users in Galway city and county according to the Chief Superintendent of Galway garda division.
At a meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee this week (25/4), Chief Superintendent Tom Curley said Galway has one of the most active Garda Drugs Units in the country outside Dublin.
Of the 500 users, the garda chief says about 100 are heroin addicts who use the drug on a daily basis.
He is advising anyone who finds needles or other drug-related equipment to contact gardaí.
The latest garda figures show that 11 thousand 300 euro worth of heroin was seized in the first three months of this year.
More than 100 thousand euro worth of ecstacy was seized, while 71 thousand euro worth of cannabis was seized and more than 7 thousand euro worth of cocaine.
Detections for the sale or supply of drugs in the city were up by almost 10 per cent between January and March.
Chief Superintendent Curley says it’s not just about arresting heroin users, but helping them kick the addiction.
