Galway Bay fm newsroom – The ongoing issue of illegal Traveller encampments in the city is an expensive ‘cat and mouse game’ that’s costing the tax-payer a six figure sum.
That’s according to Councillor Michael Crowe, who says the latest encampment at Merlin Woods will require yet another expensive court order to remove.
He says the occupants are refusing to leave the Doughiska estate, which is the latest in a series of illegal sites including Galway Airport, Renmore, Knocknacarra and Ballybane.
The Fianna Fail Councillor has revealed that between legal and security costs, the City Council is facing a bill of over 100 thousand euro – a figure he says could easily double.
Councillor Crowe says that the situation is getting out of hand – and it’s benefitting no-one.
He says that while it’s not the preferable option, the next step could see those responsible put behind bars.
