Galway Bay fm newsroom – A controversial 1916 memorial plaque in the city has been defaced.
The commemorative stone at Connolly Avenue in Mervue, which was erected in a public space without permission, is due to be removed by the City Council.
The plaque is dedicated to the people of Galway who stood up for the Irish Republic.
It featured a green and white Easter lily – which is traditionally worn by Irish republicans as a symbol of remembrance.
However, the plaque has been defaced, with the lily being covered over by paint.
According to the City Council, it is not yet known who erected the stone.
Both the Mervue Residents’ Association and Galway Sinn Féin say they did not commission the plaque.
