Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway has the third highest number of nursing home beds in the country.
There are 42 centres for older people across the city and county, with a total of 1828 beds.
The Health Information and Quality Authority has published its Overview Report on Nursing Home Inspections for 2015.
HIQA carried out 411 inspections of 343 nursing homes across Ireland last year.
Of these inspections, 49% were unannounced and 51% were announced.
The health watchdog says majority of centres are compliant with their statutory obligations.
CEO of Alone Sean Moynihan says the instances of abuse recorded are too high.
