Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Agriculture Minister has revealed that it’s unlikely that anyone will be prosecuted over the serious neglect of horses at Briarhill.
It follows the launch of an investigation by the Department last month after the discovery of a significant number of dead and malnourished animals at a site in the area.
‘A nightmare of cruelty and neglect’ – the words used by rescue charity Hungry Horse Outside to describe the situation when it visited the site at Briarhill last month.
They discovered a significant number of carcasses in advanced stages of decomposition at the site – and a further number of animals, including foals, in a serious state of malnourishment.
It rescued a number of the animals, but despite their efforts, some of the rescued horses were beyond help and had to be put to sleep.
The Department of Agriculture subsequently launched an investigation into the incident.
However, in a written response to a question tabled by Deputy Noel Grealish in the Dail this week, Minister Simon Coveney has indicated that prosecution is unlikely.
He says none of the carcasses or rescued animals were micro-chipped – without which, it is not possible to bring a successful prosecution.
