Galway Bay fm newsroom – Irish Water says further sewer cleaning works may be required at Shop Street in the coming weeks, following a significant blockage last week.
A large ‘fatberg’ was discovered in the city’s sewer network, and is being blamed for major odour and overflow issues across the city.
A ‘fatberg’ is a congealed lump of fat, often containing wet wipes or other sanitary items, which doesn’t break down in the system.
A new project initiated by Irish Water has discovered the blockages, which could cost hundreds of thousands of euro to fix.
In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, Irish Water says the works at Shop Street are finished for the time being, but there is still a significant amount of grease in the sewer.
The utility says once CCTV footage is reviewed, further cleaning may be carried out in the area.
It says this work will get underway in the coming weeks, and will be carried out outside of business hours.
Meanwhile, preventative sewer cleaning will take place over the coming weeks at various locations across the city.
The contracts for the cleaning works were awarded by tender, and Irish Water says it cannot disclose the cost involved.
