Galway Bay fm newsroom – Ballyloughane beach in Renmore is on a list of 6 beaches nationwide which are still classed as having ‘poor’ bathing water quality.
However, over 90 per cent of Irish bathing waters have met minimum EU standards for this year.
The latest report from the Environmental Protection Agency shows just six of our 137 bathing spots are of a poor level, including Ballyloughane.
Under recent changes to how the standards are assessed, water quality over the course of four years leads to the annual classifications.
This means that there has been a marked improvement at Ballyloughane, however the 2014 poor quality assessment still influenced its 2015 result.
Meanwhile, Clifden showed a marked improvement in 2015 following the installation of a new wastewater treatment plant.
All samples taken in Clifden in 2015 were of ‘excellent’ quality.
