Council faces land quandary along main Connemara route

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council is now in the process of buying land on both sides of the N59 between Oughterard and Maam Cross – even though there is no certainty that a major upgrading project on that section of road can go ahead.
€1.5m. was set aside this year for buying the lands and the Council is now in negotiation with landowners.
Lands along the N59 road between Oughterard and Maam Cross have been taken over by Galway County Council – that was part of the package when An Bord Pleanála gave planning permission for a major development on that section of the N59.
The quandary faced by the Council now as it enters into negotiation on paying for the land is that they cannot yet get the go-ahead to start the actual roadwork.
There has been a hold up for almost two years as the National Parks and Wildlife Service has not agreed to the roadworks plan but the landowners have to be paid. 1.5 million euro was set aside by the Government for N59 land purchases this year, and the valuations are going ahead.
As efforts to start-up the road works remain stalled, a worst case scenario could leave Galway County Council with lands that cannot be fenced or otherwise used.
