Galway Bay fm newsroom – A meeting of Galway County Council has heard that Councillors are ‘deeply unhappy’ with the draft Local Area Plan for Portumna.
Councillor Jimmy McClearn told the Executive that the plan was based on historical maps that had no basis in reality.
He was supported by Councillor Anne Rabbitte who said that the map put 111 houses in Portumna under a flood plain – despite the fact that not one of those homes flooded during major flooding in 2009.
Director of Services Catherine McConnell defended the map, stating that when carrying out flood risk assessment, they had to take an extremely cautious approach.
She said that more detailed cfram maps are due next month – but warned that past examples indicated it was unlikely these would change the plan.
Councillor McClearn said that the maps did not take into account remedial works undertaken in the area that negated flood risks over 20 years ago.
Chief Executive Kevin Kelly said that it was clear that dissatisfaction was high, but that the plan was based on the best information they had to hand – and a town like Portumna could not operate on an ad-hoc basis.
Councillor McClearn says the current maps are of huge concern to locals.
