Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway Gardaí will be out in force this weekend, as the Easter bank holiday gets underway.
Statistically, bank holiday weekends are one of the most dangerous times to be on the road – nationally, 64 people have been killed or seriously injured over the Easter Period between 2009 and 2015.
With thousands of people expected to travel this weekend, the RSA and An Garda Síochána are urging road-users to be vigilant on the road, and to ensure they wear seatbelts, observe the speed limit and avoid drink-driving.
Garda resources will be deployed over the weekend across the city and county to increase compliance amongst road users, and improve road safety.
An analysis of road fatalities for 2015 showed that 1 in 4 drivers killed and 1 in 3 passengers killed were not wearing their seatbelt at the time of the collision.
Motorists are advised that speeding is the single greatest contributory factor to road deaths and serious injuries.
Gardaí are also warning motorists of the dangers of drink driving – and to be particularly aware of the risk involved in driving the morning after a night out.
Regional Traffic Superintendent Noel Kelly says drvers should take their time, and enjoy the weekend without putting themselves and others at risk.
