Galway Bay fm newsroom – Irish Water is refuting claims that there is an increased risk from chemicals in areas of Galway affected by boil notices.
A boil water notice remains in place for Williamstown, Loughrea, Carraroe and Tiernee/Lettermore.
Friends of the Irish Environment (FOIE) claims that boiling water could increase the potency of trihalomethanes in the water.
THMs are formed by the reaction of chlorine with natural organic matter such as algae, twigs and leaves.
The group had filed a complaint to the EU Ombudsman about what it claims is Irish Water’s failure to be upfront about the dangers of excessive THMs.
However, speaking to NewsBreak, Mark McCauley from Irish Water says their procedures are carefully monitored to prevent any risk to public health.
