Galway Bay fm newsroom – The City Council is working to introduce a raft of measures to tackle growing problems with traffic in the city.
The initiatives include real time parking information, a park by text system, and stricter enforcement of parking bye-laws.
While all these measures have been outlined, the City Council has yet to reveal its plans for the future of the city’s dedicated Traffic Control Centre.
As people grow increasing frustrated with Galway’s traffic problems, the City Council is gearing up to tackle the issue.
New real-time parking information signs will go live across the city in the coming weeks.
The signs, which provide information on available spaces in public and private carparks.
Currently, city junctions are operating at up to 150% over their intended capacity – and over the past six months, traffic volumes in the city have increased by 10%.
To tackle the problem, Galway City Council is working on an Integrated Traffic Management Programme, which will look at various alternatives to private car use.
The plan is being developed using capital funding, which means there’s no direct financial impact on the council’s budget.
Early next year, a ‘park by text’ system will introduced, the city bike scheme will be extended, and road improvement works will take place in the Knocknacarra area.
The design process for safety works at Ballindooley Cross and access upgrades for Parkmore will also get underway shortly.
It’s also hoped a planning application will be submitted in 2016 for a new entrance for Merlin Park Hospital.
Work on developing a Tuam Road bus and cycle corridor is also underway, and the council also hopes to provide extra disabled parking spaces, more bus shelters and cycle parking.
