Galway Bay fm newsroom – Students at NUI Galway have voted in favour of the decriminalisation of drugs for personal use.
It follows last year’s referendum at the university on the legalisation of cannabis, in which students overwhelmingly voted to support the growth, sale and usage of the illegal drug.
2,532 students went to the polls in yesterday’s Student Union referendum at NUI Galway – with 1609 of those expressing support for the decriminalisation of drugs for personal use.
Their message was clear – and it means that the Student Union at the university will officially adopt a stance in support of the motion.
Meanwhile, the student body also voted yesterday to decide the Student Unions stance on the abolition of the Direct Provision system.
Of the 2544 who voted in that referendum, an overwhelming majority supported the abolition of the system, with just 505 opposing the move.
The result of yesterday’s dual referendum means that the Student Union at NUI Galway now officially supports the decriminalisation of drugs for personal use, and the abolition of the Direct Provision system.
