Galway Bay fm newsroom – The process of filling the three local authority seats in Galway left vacant by the general election gets underway today (29/2).
Two seats are vacant on the county council following the election of Seán Canney and Anne Rabbitte in Galway East.
There’s one seat vacant on the city council with the election of Catherine Connolly in Galway West/South Mayo.
The new Roscommon / Galway constituency had the highest voter turnout in the country for general election 2016 with 71 and a half percent.
By tradition the vacated seat goes to the party involved which is Fianna Fáil in Anne Rabbitte’s case.
When it’s an Independent, as is the case with Catherine Connolly and Seán Canney, it goes to another Independent candidate.
Meetings and discussions will take place from today to decide on the co-options.
Meanwhile, the full complement of eleven TDs for Galway’s three constituencies was decided last evening when the Galway West count ended.
Galway West is to be represented by two Fine Gael TDs, Sean Kyne and Hildegarde Naughton, one Fianna Fáil Éamon Ó Cuív, and two Independents Noel Grealish and Catherine Connolly.
Galway East is to be represented by one Fine Gael Ciaran Cannon, one Fianna Fáil Anne Rabbitte and one Independent Seán Canney.
Roscommon-Galway’s representatives are Independents Denis Naughten and Michael Fitzmaurice and Fianna Fáil’s Eugene Murphy.
