Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Labour Party is coming under fire for it’s decision to use a site owned by Galway firm JJ Rhatigan to launch a new housing policy.
The party launched it’s ‘Making Homes Affordable’ policy this week at a Limerick site owned by the city-based construction firm.
UNITE Trade Union says it’s a highly disappointing choice by Labour given that JJ Rhatigan was last year found to be in breach of workers rights.
Last January, the Labour Court found the rights of members working for the firm at the Kishoge Community College site near Lucan, West Dublin, had been breached.
In a dispute that lasted several months, workers claimed they’d been under-paid due to a system of sub-contracting, with some workers earning less than five euro an hour.
Tom Fitzgerald of UNITE says the move places a question mark over Labour’s commitment to workers rights.
