Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Board of Management at Presentation College in Athenry is to host a public meeting on Thursday over what it describes as the ‘deliberate’ delay of the construction of a new school building.
The board is seeking the support of the Galway East election candidates ahead of polling day on February 26th.
The board of management says the Department of Education has failed to move forward with a planning application for a new school on lands owned by the school opposite the Raheen Woods Hotel.
In June 2012, a site was purchased for a new school building using voluntary contributions of parents.
The Department subsequently included the school in the School Building Programme 2011 – 2016.
However, the board claims the planning application has been halted on the instruction of the Department.
The Board of Management says as a result, students are enduring ‘unsuitable conditions’ while their parents’ voluntary contributions service a loan.
It’s understood the Department and CEIST are engaged in intensive discussions in an effort to solve the impasse and to ensure a planning application is lodged for a new school.
A public meeting on the issue will take place in the Raheen Woods Hotel at 7.30 on Thursday evening.
