Documents on the career of Joseph Brennan, former Governor of Maine and US Congressman – whose parents were both from Carna in Connemara – are being handed over to the Maine Irish Heritage Centre established in the US state by the Connemara diaspora there.
Joseph Brennan, who continues to live in Portland in Maine, was a two-time State Governor and a US Congressman.
His political career included two terms as State’s Governor of Maine, two terms in Congress in Washington and two terms as a member of the National Maritime Commission.
One of the remarkable events of his career was his appointment of George Mitchell – one time peace emissary to Northern Ireland- as a Senator. As State Governor, it fell to Joseph Brennan to name a replacement Senator and his decision set George Mitchell on his political path.
Governor Brennan’s father, John, left Carna in Connemara as a young boy. Governor Brennan’s mother, Catherine Mulkerrins, also emigrated from Carna. They met and married in Portland.
The Connemara diaspora established the Maine Irish Heritage Centre in that city a decade ago and now Joseph Brennan is donating many of his political papers to the Centre where they will be kept into the future.
