Galway Bay fm newsroom – Students at GMIT have come out in force today to support their lecturers as they strike over underfunding and staffing levels at the college.
Lecturers and researchers at GMIT’s Dublin Road and Letterfrack locations are striking over what they describe as ‘brutal’ cuts to the sector.
The strike at all the country’s ITs is organised by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland.
Key concerns at GMIT include chronic underfunding, low staffing levels, increased class sizes and academic exploitation.
The TUI says GMIT has suffered budget cuts of almost 40% since 2008 – despite an increase in students during the same period.
The picket got underway at the GMIT Campus at the Dublin Road at 7.30 this morning, and will continue until 7.30 this evening.
Parts of the campus remain closed this morning, as some caretaking staff are refusing to cross the picket line.
Students say they understand the difficult position their lecturers find themselves in.
