Galway Bay fm newsroom – Supermac’s boss Pat McDonagh says the setback suffered in the bid to expand to Europe is not as negative as it seems and he may appeal it
It follows an EU ruling that the Galway-based company cannot sell it’s food in restaurants across Europe.
The decision granted Supermac’s a trademark – but ruled it cannot use it’s brand name to sell meat, hamburgers, poultry, fish, chicken nuggets or onion rings.
It means that while there’s now no bar to Supermac’s restaurants appearing in Europe, the only thing customers would be able to buy is chips.
The EU Office for Harmonistation in the Internal Market found that the similarities with McDonald’s, who have long contested the expansion, would cause confusion.
Speaking to Keith Finnegan, Pat McDonagh says the situation seems open to appeal.
