Galway Bay fm newsroom – Just five new Garda recruits have been assigned to Galway in the past six years.
That’s according to Sinn Fein Senator Trevor O’ Clochartaigh, who says the figure was confirmed to his party colleague Deputy Pearse Doherty in a parlimentary reply.
He says the five are from the first batch of Garda Recruits since 2009 – and are a long way short of covering the drop in Garda numbers across the county.
He says that the number of Gardai stationed in Galway has dropped from 601 to 565 over the past five years – a loss of 36 Gardai.
The Sinn Fein Senator says the shortfall comes at a time CSO figures are indicating that assaults, burglaries, sexual offences, and fraud are on the rise.
Senator O Clochartaigh says that the people of Galway deserve a full staffed, well resourced police force.
