Galway Bay fm newsroom – Craughwell’s out-of-hours GP service is set to be reviewed.
Westdoc has been strongly criticised after it was revealed that Craughwell’s out-of-hours service is currently provided by a doctor based in Roscommon.
Under the current arrangement, Craughwell residents and Roscommon residents effectively ‘share’ an out-of-hours GP.
As the doctor is based in Roscommon, he or she has to travel around 70km to reach a patient in Craughwell.
This applies to the Westdoc out-of-hours service during the so-called ‘red eye’ shift between midnight and 8am from Monday to Wednesday.
In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, WestDoc says the arrangement was put in place on a trial basis – and the trial period will come to an end next week. (Jan 27)
It says the decision was based on all available information and criteria, and only came into force in November.
Westdoc says a full review of out-of-hours GP services in the region will get underway in the coming months.
