Galway Bay fm newsroom – There’s been mixed fortunes for Athenry retailers this week after permission was granted for one discount retailer, and refused for another.
An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission to Swandive Limited for a retail development at Cross Street/Clarke Street in Athenry.
The approved development was originally granted planning approval by the County Council.
However the applicant, Swandive Limited, contested a planning condition requiring a method statement for the conservation of rubble stone boundary walls.
The company felt it would lead to unnecessary and costly delays.
The occupants of neighbouring properties also lodged an appeal due to concerns about large vehicles trying to turn and potential anti-social behaviour.
An Bord Pleanála is allowing the development to go ahead with 21 conditions.
The board stipulates that the development be amended so that the foodstore is sited a minimum of 3 metres away from the western site boundary including the rubble stone wall.
Also access from the junction of Clarke and Cross Streets must be one-way inbound only.
The go-ahead for the discount foodstore comes in the same week that An Bord Pleanála refused permission for a discount foodstore and off-licence at Church Street in Athenry.
That application by JJ Brady was blocked by retail representative group RGDATA which lodged the appeal.
An Bord Pleanála decided that this proposal on a greenfield site outside the town walls of Athenry would threaten the viability of the town centre.
