The scene of a house fire in Oughterard town which claimed the life of a woman in her 70s yesterday remains sealed off this morning.
Gardaí were alerted to a blaze at the terraced house at Camp Street shortly after half past twelve yesterday afternoon.
Emergency services attended the scene and discovered the body of the woman, known locally as Joan Conneely at her home.
Her body was removed to University Hospital Galway for a post mortem examination.
She lived alone and there were no other people in the house at the time but it’s understood Joan’s dog also died in the blaze.
She has spent most of her life in Oughterard and had worked at J.P. Keogh’s shop in the town up until recent years.
At this point Gardaí say they are not treating the fire as suspicious.
It’s the second fatal fire to take place in the county in just over a week.
87-year-old Nora Wilson died in a fire at her house in Brierfield on Monday of last week. (26/10)
