Galway Bay fm newsroom – Flooding in South Galway is set to worsen today as poor weather conditions continue and water runs off higher ground.
Additional soldiers and an army helicopter have been deployed to the region to tackle the spreading crisis.
The situation across South Galway is expected to get much worse today, as water runs off higher ground and heavy rainfall is expected throughout the day.
Members of the Defense Forces are now operating on double shifts filling and placing sandbags to hold back rising water levels across the region.
The deployment of additional soldiers comes as around 30 homes in South Galway are under threat of flooding – while up to 10 are already underwater.
The majority of those homes are in the Kiltartan, Peterswell, Skehanagh, Cahermore, and Tirneevin areas.
A Defense Forces helicopter has also been deployed to supply residents isolated by flood waters, and a significant number of inaccessible animals across the area.
Many local roads remain closed across South Galway this morning – particularly south and west of the N18.
Motorists are being advised to stick to main routes – and a full list of affected roads is available on the Galway County Council website.
Concerns remain in place for Portumna, where pumping is continuing to keep the N65 Bridge Road open.
Ballinasloe Town’s flood defense measures are working well and the County Council is confident that the town will not experience any flooding.
Levels in the Dunkellin River continue to rise, but Gardai say the situation is being monitored and there’s no immediate threat to Craughwell.
