No decision likely on Galway Airport until next year

Galway Bay fm newsroom – It looks likely that any decision on the future use of Galway Airport will not be made until the new year.
The agreement in place for Galway Airport expired one week ago – and marked the ending of commercial aviation activity at the site for the second time in 2 years.
Discussions between Galway City and County Councils and previous operator Carnmore Aviation Limited are ongoing.
With no decision yet reached, it looks increasingly likely that the future of the site will not be decided until the new year.
In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the county council says any proposals which arise in relation to the future use of the site will have to go before members of both local authorities.
A recent meeting of the county council heard that a number of parties have expressed interest in using some or all of the site – and future development may not be compatiable with maintaining an airport.
Chief Executive Kevin Kelly warned councillors at that meeting that while the council is not against aviation at the site, it is not in a position to support a venture that is not able to stand on its own two feet.
The previous agreement saw the city and county councils contribute 100 thousand euro towards the operation of the site – but Kevin Kelly says circumstances have changed and any new agreement will involve minimal cost to the local authorities.
