City by-pass wont open before 2024

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway won’t have an outer city bypass before 2024, despite earlier predictions that it could open by 2019 or 2020.
The city council was given an update on the Galway City Ring Road at a meeting of the local authority last evening. (12/12)
Eileen McCarthy from ARUP outlined the major structures as part of the 593 million euro road project.
These are a bridge over the river Corrib, a viaduct at Menlo, a tunnel at Lackagh Quarries and a tunnel at Galway Racecourse.
She said the design of the tunnels has been shortened significantly due to the exorbitant costs associated with tunnels.
Eileen added that there are 42 homes planned for demolition and talks with homeowners have been hard.
She said the owners of homes, which don’t have to be demolished but will be impacted due to close location with the new road have been the most difficult.
NUI Galway is set to lose a GAA pitch and a sports pitch in front of the pavillion but they’re in negotiation with the college to provide more sports space.
Councillors were told that it’s hoped to submit the planning application to An Bord Pleanala in the second quarter of 2017 with an oral hearing before the end of the year.
If approval is given and there are no delays, it’s expected construction will begin in 2021 with a completion date of 2024.
