Galway Bay fm newsroom – Island Ferries, Gaeltacht Minister Sean Kyne and County CEO Kevin Kelly are locked in talks this morning as Inis Mór residents remain without a ferry service.
A high level meeting is underway this morning in a bid to find a solution to the Aran Island ferry crisis. (11am)
Residents of and visitors to the Aran Island of Inis Mór are facing a second day without a ferry service in more than 30 years.
The Island Ferries service ceased on Wednesday, and is due to remain out of action until March.
Last evening, County Councillors gave CEO Kevin Kelly a mandate to meet with Island Ferries on their behalf.
The council is also to contact the Taoiseach and the Department of the Gaeltacht in a bid to reinstate a ferry service as soon as possible.
Speaking ahead of this morning’s meeting, spokesperson for Island Ferries Jason O’Sullivan said the company wants a 50% reduction in the 80c per passenger levy.
He says the company is hopeful a compromise can be reached.
