Galway Bay fm newsroom – A report has been published following an investigation into an explosion and fire on board the ‘Pegasus’ boat off Oranmore strand in April this year.
The investigation was led by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board.
The incident took place on April 9th when the vessel was situated in its own swinging mooring in Oranmore Bay to the south of Galway Bay Sailing Club.
The owner went into the cabin to light the gas to put the kettle on and had struck a match while standing in front of the cooker.
This was followed immediately by a large explosion and fireball.
Two men on board were taken to UHG.
The investigation concludes that as the explosion caused severe damage to the boat, it is not possible to be certain of the layout of the gas cyclinder, regulator and hose prior to the explosion.
However, it noted that as the gas hose was detached from the cooker hose tail and blackened on inspection, it is most likely that it had become loose or partially detached before the incident took place.
It was also noted that if a gas alarm had been installed, it would have sounded as soon as gas started flowing from the hose, thus giving adequate warning.
A number of safety recommendations were also put forward.
