Galway Bay fm newsroom – The City Council is being accused of making a mockery of Galway’s newly awarded European Green Leaf status by allegedly supporting the erosion of green spaces in the city.
In June, Galway saw off stiff competition from cities in Spain and Finland to become the first Irish city to be awarded the designation of EU Green Leaf City for 2017.
However, the Terryland Forest Alliance claims the local authority is now making a mockery of the award – by proposing to support the construction of buildings and roads through vital green spaces in the draft City Development Plan.
The volunteer group says the City Council has also advised that park maintenance workers will be reduced next year – and the Terryland Forest Park committee will no longer meet due to a lack of funding.
It follows the passing of the City Council’s budget for 2017, which was branded the most difficult budget in 40 years by city CEO Brendan McGrath.
Campaigners are hosting a public meeting to discuss the feared erosion of city green spaces at the Maldron Hotel tomorrow at 7.30pm.
