Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City Council says it had to shut down its household hazardous waste collection service at the weekend because householders outside the city sought to avail of the service.
The once a year service was due to be available to residents of the city from 8.15am to noon last Saturday.
However many people were turned away from the Liosban facility around 9am having been told the service had reached capacity.
Local Councillor Ollie Crowe branded the early closure as a disgrace and is demanding that the local authority schedule another collection service.
However, in a statement to Galway Bay fm News, the city council says the provision of household hazardous waste collection is extremely expensive.
The council adds that it is confined to households within the city and limited to volume restrictions – points which were indicated on published notices.
However, the local authority says householders from outside the city sought to avail of the service on Saturday.
It will now liaise with the county council to ensure that in the future, both local authorities provide the service at the same time.
