Overall crime down across the county

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Crime in county Galway seems to be dropping.
That’s according to the latest garda statistics which were presented at a meeting of the County Joint Policing Committee.
They show a drop of almost a third on overall crime across the county since last year.
The biggest area to see a decrease is burglaries.
There has been a 44 per cent drop in burglaries in the county in the first ten months of the year compared to the same periosd last year.
Thefts from the person have also dropped by almost a third.
In terms of drugs seizures, there has been a 6 per cent drop in the seizure of drugs for sale or supply in the county, with the main detections in rural villages and towns.
The largest haul by gardaí was of cannabis, with more than 117 thousand euro worth of it seized so far this year.
Several members of the Joint Policing Committee raised the issue of road safety and Chief Superintendent of Galway garda division, Tom Curley says there has been a 33 per cent decrease in fatal crashes in the county.
He added that 6 people have still died on the roads so far this year and that is six people too many.
Speeding offences were down by almost a third since the beginning of the year, while drink driving is down by 11 per cent.
Almost 13 thousand breath tests have been carried out in the county so far this year.
Assault causing harm is down by 16 percent, while minor assaults also saw a 22 per cent drop.
Chief Superintendent Curley told the meeting that the division has received some new patrol cars and 3 new vans for the Tuam, Ballinasloe and Salthill districts.
He also said that the addition of two new gardaí to the Loughrea district has created a great buzz in the force and in the community and ‘likened it to winning the lotto.’
While the Chief Superintendent is finding it difficult to fill roles in the Headford area, he says there are a number of gardaí willing to move from Mayo to Clifden.
