Galway Bay fm newsroom – The lack of student accommodation in the city looks set for imprvovement.
An Bord Pleanála has given final planning approval for new apartment block for students and holidaymakers in Bohermore.
IVS Student Development Bohermore was initially granted planning permission at Sandyfort Business Centre by the city council.
However that decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála citing concerns about traffic congestion, safety and parking.
The development involves changing the existing 3 storey office block at the site into a four storey over a basement building.
It will accommodate 77 professionally managed student and self-catering holiday apartment suites.
An Bord Pleanála has decided to let the development go ahead with conditions attached, stating that it would be acceptable in terms of traffic safety.
One condition stipulates that a proposed roof terrace at the south-west of the building be left out of the plans.
Also the accommodation must be used solely for students except during the months of June, July and August when it may be used for short-term holiday accommodation.
