Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Department of Health is said to be concerned following the resignation of two senior midwifery experts from the Saolta Hospitals Group.
The two experts were recruited following the death of Savita Halappanavar at UHG, which led to a series of recommendations to improve maternity services.
Group director of midwifery Dawn Johnston is leaving her post with the Saolta Group, after coming from Britain’s National Health Service.
Professor of midwifery Declan Devane left earlier this year.
He was two years into a five-year, half-time secondment from NUI Galway which was designed to help roll out improvements in maternity services following reports into Savita’s death.
The Indian dentist died at UHG in 2012 after staff failed to spot the sudden onset of sepsis on time.
According to the Irish Times, a spokesperson for the hospital group said the resignations were not connected.
