Galway Bay fm newsroom – Calls are being made for more to be done to provide adequate accommodation for Travellers.
It comes as candlelight vigils were held in the city and Ballinasloe this lunchtime to mark the first anniversary of the Carrickmines tragedy.
10 members of the Travelling community died in a fire at the Dublin halting site this day last year.
The local vigils were organised by Galway Traveller Movement and took place at Eyre Square in the city and at St Michael’s Square in Ballinasloe.
Up to 40 people, including a number of public representatives, gathered in the city to mark the anniversary and remember those who lost their lives.
Many told NewsBreak they feel not enough is being done to ensure the tragedy never happens again.
A memorial service was also held in Balally in Dublin where Parish Priest of the Travelling People Derek Farrell said the families lives have been changed forever.
