Galway Bay fm newsroom – City Councillors have voted in favour of a new sponsorship programme to tackle overgrown roundabouts across the city.
The initiative was proposed by Councillor Pearce Flannery and will seek sponsorship from local businesses for the upkeep of certain roundabouts within the city boundaries.
Such a scheme is already operated at a number of local authorities around the country and usually involves landscaping and maintenance works in exchange for small and discreet advertisements.
Councillors were in broad agreement at this week’s meeting of the City Council that action has to be taken sooner rather than later to address the current situation.
Despite an assertion from Director of Services Tom Connell that significant work has been done and more is to be carried out over the coming weeks, councillors voted overwhelming in favour of the proposal.
It’s expected that the City Council will seek expressions of interest from potential sponsors over the coming months.
Councillor Flannery says a number of businesses have already expressed interest in supporting the initiative.
