Galway Bay fm newsroom – The City Council is warning that it may be forced to resort to a compulsory purchase order to secure a new cemetery for the city as current sites near capacity.
At this week’s meeting of the local authority, Chief Executive Brendan McGrath said that the use of compulsory powers is on the table.
Despite making contact with over thirty landowners and holding a considerable number of assessments, Galway City Council is no closer to sourcing a site for a new cemetery in the city.
At this week’s meeting of the local authority, Chief Executive Brendan McGrath said the securing of a new site is an absolute priority on which the clock is running.
He said steps will be taken to ensure Galway city has a new cemetery – and he wants it known that the use of compulsory powers is on the cards.
Mr McGrath told those in attendance that Bohermore is now effectively full, and short-term measures to expand Rahoon cemetery are currently being considered.
Plans to establish and develop a new cemetery site to serve the city, that will accommodate services such as a crematorium, date back several years.
