Galway Bay fm newsroom – A major conference focusing on the Galway Diaspora begins this morning in Clarinbridge.
The conference, which is being held in the Galway Oyster Festival tent is organised by Galway County Council with assistance from a number of community and family history organisations.
Joe McHugh, the Minister of State for the Diaspora and Overseas Development, is performing the official opening of the conference in Clarinbridge this morning with Co Council Chairman, Michael Connolly, welcoming over 170 people to the event.
The theme is “Emigration and Our Galway County Diaspora” and it is being organised by the Heritage Section of the County Council.
Speakers this morning include Dr Gerard Moran, an authority on the Irish Diaspora and John Grenham, co-presenter of the RTE “Genealogy Road Show” speaking about “ United Kingdom sources for Galway Emigrants”.
Dr Jennifer Redmond, a lecturer in Twentieth Century Irish History in Maynooth College will speak about “Migration from Post Famine Ireland” before lunch with further presentations in the afternoon.
This conference coincides with the development of a county wide diaspora strategy by Galway County Council aimed at creating stronger links with those overseas.
