Galway Bay fm newsroom – 16 people donated their bodies to medical students at NUI Galway last year.
The Medical Council’s annual report reveals that a total of 97 people made the decision to donate their body to training doctors and surgeons across Ireland during 2015.
There are five body donation programmes in Ireland, including one at NUI Galway.
The donation pledge must be made by the person themselves prior to their death in a process called ‘primary consent.’
A body that has been subject of a post mortem examination cannot be used.
Around 70 bodies have been donated to NUI Galway since 2012.
