Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway TD is vowing to continue his campaign to bring same day voting to Galway’s Islands following the passing of a bill in the Dail eliminating the measure.
An Oireachtas meeting last week discussed an amendment proposed by Deputy Eamon O’ Cuiv to the Electoral Amendment Bill 2015.
The amendment asked that residents on the Aran Islands and Inishbofin be allowed cast their votes at the same time as everyone else.
Deputy O’ Cuiv says that being forced to have their say a day earlier than the mainland, means having to sacrifice a day of work or education to travel home on a Thursday.
Last week, the proposed change was shot down at a sitting of the Select Committe on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, which heard that the returning officer for the constituency was against the move.
The bill has now been passed by the Dail, and will move onto the Seanad – and Deputy O’ Cuiv is pledging to continue the fight there.
He says that residents on islands off Cork cast their votes on the same day as the mainland – and there’s no valid reason why Galway’s islanders cannot do the same.
The Fianna Fail Deputy says the Government’s negative view on the matter is based on long distant past circumstances.
